Brooke Ross fired a shot into the left side of the goal with 4.7 seconds remaining in regulation, lifting fourth-seeded Davidson to an 11-10 victory over top-seeded Richmond in the Atlantic 10 women’s lacrosse semifinals Friday.
The Wildcats advanced to the conference championship game for the first time in program history. Coming out of a timeout in the final moments, Ross caught a pass from Aeryn Curren and drained the winning shot. The Wildcats earned the ensuing draw control, clinching their first-ever appearance in the title game.
Davidson will meet Virginia Commonwealth for the Atlantic 10 championship Sunday.
With lackluster metrics (RPI:24, SOS: 57), Richmond faces an uphill battle for NCAA tournament at-large consideration. Three of the Spiders’ four losses were by one goal. They do possess wins over Virginia and South Florida.
Davidson’s win wasn’t the only thriller Friday. In an America East semifinal, Bryant rallied from a four-goal deficit to tie the game late in the fourth quarter, but UAlbany got the last word. Mya Carroll scored with 1:03 remaining to lift the Great Danes to a 12-11 victory.
