History hasn't been kind to Christopher Newport when it comes to matchups against Washington and Lee. Thankfully for the Captains, history doesn't play the games.

Christopher Newport, which entered Sunday's NCAA Division III women's second round game 2-18 all time against W&L, walked away victorious when Brooklynn Peterson finished a feed from Brookelyn Morrison in overtime. CNU advances to next weekend's third round with an 8-7 win.

Consecutive goals from Lara Baki had the Generals ahead 6-3 by halftime. History appeared bound to repeat itself. But the sides traded goals in the third, and down 7-4 entering the final 15 minutes, Christopher Newport's defense pitched a shutout and the offense knotted it at 7.

Elena Sorkin scored the equalizer with 4:04 to go in regulation, and Hadley Chadwick made a save with five seconds left on the clock to push the game to overtime.

Continue below to see the winners and second-round schedule. Those third-round games are scheduled for Saturday, May 16, and Sunday, May 17.

Other results of note:

  • Amherst is headed to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2019 after holding off Stevens 11-8. Amherst limited the Ducks to just two goals in the second half. Bridget Finley and Emily Petersen each scored three goals for the Mammoths while Stevens was led by Alina Friz. Friz had a hand in all but one of the Ducks' goals, finishing with four goals and three assists.
  • Taylor Glanville scored the final two goals of the game, the last as time expired, to lead Pomona-Pitzer past nextdoor neighbor Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 14-13. It was the 18th straight win for the Sagehens in the series between the West Coast powers - all since 2020. Claremont had won the previous eight meetings. Glanville led Pomona with four goals while Ella Seidel scored five for Claremont.
  • Rowan closed the game with five straight goals from Elaina Corson and Madison Rothwein to rally past Scranton for a 13-11 upset win. Scranton's Jessica McCabe had scored three straight goals to give the Royals an 11-8 lead early in the fourth quarter before the Profs went on their closing run. Corson had five goals and an assist to lead the Rowan offense. Jillian Lopez scored six goals for Scranton.
  • Williams is in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2014 after upsetting William Smith 11-10. Katy McCullough had a hat trick for Williams with all three coming during a key 5-0 run bridging halftime that gave Williams a 9-5 lead it never relinquished. Taryn Luzi led William Smith with four goals.
