Boston College Athletics

Goal scoring is at an all-time high in college lacrosse since the adoption of the shot clock in Division I in 2017. The natural evolution of the game has led to gradual scoring increases over time, too.

Naturally, these factors — along with extra years of eligibility granted due to the COVID pandemic — have led to a decent amount of turnover in program record books across the country.

We compiled the leading goal scorer for every current Division I women's program just in time for fall ball to signal the beginnings of another season. Keep reading for some of our most notable findings.

Note: The goal totals below include goals scored while some teams were Division II member schools. The table is intended to list the top goal scorer in program history for each current Division I school, regardless of where/when those goals were scored.

NOTABLE FINDINGS

  • Still Standing — The oldest program record still standing belongs to Pixie Hamilton of William & Mary. Hamilton set the program mark in 1980.
  • ... and Counting — Six program records are held by players who are still active, and that number will climb to at least seven when Florida State begins its NCAA era this season.
  • 2025 — Fourteen program records were set by players who graduated in 2025.
  • Since 2020 — Fifty-two program records were either set or tied since the cancelation of the 2020 season.
  • Before ESPN — A generation of lacrosse fans know Sheehan Stanwick Burch as one of the most recognizable voices in the game for her commentary on ESPN, but her record of 232 goals still stands as the best in Georgetown history.
  • Before Moving On — At least three all-time leading scorers went on to make an impact as graduate students elsewhere. Canisius all-time leading scorer Erica Evans scored 59 goals and helped Maryland win the 2019 NCAA championship. Mercer all-time leading scorer Hailey Rhatigan had 62 goals in Northwestern's 2023 NCAA championship season, and Virginia Tech record holder Paige Petty had 43 goals in Pitt's inaugural varsity season in 2022.
