Champs Westhampton, CSH Into Public High School Girls' National Top 25
Westhampton Beach (N.Y.) and Cold Spring Harbor (N.Y.) put together county championship runs to move into the latest USA Lacrosse Public High School Girls’ National Top 25, presented by CWENCH Hydration.
No. 1 Darien (Conn.) and No. 2 Sayville (N.Y.) remained perfect with a pair of county titles of their own and have more to play for in the coming week.
The Blue Wave defeated New Canaan (Conn.) 13-3 to capture their 21st FCIAC title . Adriana Gromelski scored four goals, had two draw controls and three caused turnovers. Darien opens the Class LL state tournament by hosting eighth-seeded Staples (Conn.) Friday.
Sophia Buffardi had six draw controls and was one of five players with two goals apiece in the Golden Flash's 11-7 win over Harborfields (N.Y.) for the Suffolk Class C championship. Next comes the Long Island final against South Side (N.Y.).
Westhampton Beach lost five straight games in midseason, but has rallied with six straight wins. It upset previous No. 5 West Islip (N.Y.) in the county semifinals and followed it up with a 13-9 win over Smithtown West (N.Y.) for the Suffolk Class B championship to set up a date with Garden City (N.Y.).
Cold Spring Harbor was the No. 1 seed and proved dominant in a 17-3 win over No. 3 Carle Place (N.Y.) in the Nassau Class D championship. It’s their sixth straight Nassau title.
Other notable developments:
— West Chester Henderson (Pa.) was tested but got by Radnor (Pa.) in the first round of the Pennsylvania AAA state tournament, 13-8. Springfield-Delco (Pa.), a possible semifinal opponent, also won its opener. And on the other side of the bracket, Conestoga (Pa.) bounced back from its district final loss to Henderson with an 18-10 win over Wilson (Pa.). They face Mt. Lebanon (Pa.) next.
— The North Jersey Group 4 bracket is a bear. Three nationally ranked teams are in the semifinals. Top-seeded Morristown (N.J.) faces Hunterdon Central (N.J.) in one semifinal today, and the other pits Westfield (N.J.) and Ridgewood (N.J.) against each other today at Westfield. The final is June 9. The other ranked Jersey team, Moorestown (N.J.) has had no difficulty through two rounds and hosts Mainland (N.J.) today in the South Jersey Group 3 semifinals.
— Valentina Puccio scored four goals and Juliet Johnson made nine saves to lead Huntington (N.Y.) to a 6-5 win over Ward Melville (N.Y.) in the Suffolk Class A championship game. They’ll turn their attention to Massapequa (N.Y.) for the Long Island Class A final.
— Penfield (N.Y.) won its second straight Section V Class A championship, stifling Fairport (N.Y.) 9-6 for the crown. Section MVP Karis Hand made five saves to anchor a defense that made a difference. Penfield takes on Lancaster (N.Y.) in the Class A Far West Regional today.
— Nyack (N.Y.) took a high-scoring affair, 20-17, over Yorktown (N.Y.) in the Section I Class B championship. Abby Gould scored 12 goals in the game as Nyack repeated as sectional champions. They’ll face Warwick (N.Y.) in a regional matchup.
— Moorestown is the No. 1 seed for the South Jersey Group 3 state tournament. They host Triton (N.J.) today in the first round.
— Suffern (N.Y.) won its seventh straight section championship, controlling the entire game for a 16-6 win over second-seeded Wappingers (N.Y.) in the Section 1 Class A final. Michaela Fay had five goals and four assists. They’ll play Valley Central (N.Y.) in the regional final next.
— In the regional updates, Massapequa and Cold Spring Harbor each used their title trips to move into the Northeast Region rankings. The Mid-Atlantic Region was unchanged. The Midwest Region had one change thanks to a head-to-head win. Olentangy Liberty (Ohio) handed Hudson (Ohio) a 9-8 defeat in states to flip spots in the rankings. Hudson had been the last unbeaten in the region. The South and West Regions were not updated with most of the teams' seasons concluded.
