PA District Champ Henderson Climbs Public High School Girls' National Top 25

West Chester Henderson (Pa.) was the only team to beat Conestoga (Pa.) in the regular season. The Warriors showed it was no fluke, defeating ‘Stoga for the second time this season, this time in the Pennsylvania District 1 AAA championship, 12-6, to move into the Top 10 in the latest USA Lacrosse Public High School Girls’ National Top 25, presented by CWENCH Hydration.

Coronado (Calif.) is the only newcomer in the Top 25. It closed its season atop the section with a strong win over La Costa Canyon (Calif.). 

Henderson took an impressive path to its first district crown since a three-peat 1996-1998. The Warriors had to go through defending district and state champion Springfield-Delco (Pa.), 6-5, in the semifinals. Springfield bounced back to win the third-place game, 13-5, over Avon Grove (Pa.). 

In the final against Conestoga, Marquette commit Reese Heim scored seven goals. Notre Dame-bound Bailey Schalleur, whose overtime goal won the regular-season meeting, had a hat trick and Saint Joseph's commit Grace Rongaus made five saves. A 5-0 third quarter was a difference maker. The state tournament begins June 2.

Darien (Conn.) maintained its unbeaten record easily with a 20-2 win over Greenwich (Conn.) in the FCIAC semifinals. The Blue Wave will face No. 3 seed New Canaan (Conn.) for the championship today.

Manchester Valley (Md.) moves to No. 1 in the Mid-Atlantic Top 10. The Mavericks finished perfect for the second season in a row. Taylor Fique scored five goals, Addison Meyer scored four times and Taylor Bailey and Bella Miller each scored two goals apiece in a 15-4 win over Centennial (Md.) for the Class 2A state championship. The Mavericks hold a 38-game winning streak. Maryland public schools have finished their seasons.

A late goal by Harvard-bound Ashley Clark gave Garden City (N.Y.) an 11-10 win over Manhasset (N.Y.) for its sixth straight Nassau County Section VIII Class B championship. The New York state tournaments begin June 4.

Massapequa (N.Y.) won the Nassau County Section VIII Class A championship, 13-5, over Syosset (N.Y.). 

Other notable developments:

— Top-seeded Sayville (N.Y.) will try to remain unbeaten when it takes on Harborfields (N.Y.) in the Suffolk County Section XI Class C championship Sunday at Stony Brook.

— Huntington (N.Y.) avenged an earlier one-goal loss to Northport (N.Y.) when Ava Bencivenga went coast to coast to score in double overtime of the Suffolk County Section XI Class A semifinals. The Blue Devils will face Ward Melville (N.Y.) Sunday at Stony Brook in the final in a rematch of last year’s final that Huntington won. The Blue Devils won the Top-25 regular-season meeting, 9-3.

— West Islip (N.Y.) is the No. 1 seed in the Suffolk County Section XI Class B tournament. They face fourth-seeded Westhampton Beach (N.Y.) in one semifinal today and the final is slated for Sunday. 

— A 16-3 semifinal win over Greece (N.Y.) put top-seeded Penfield (N.Y.) into the finals of the Section V Class A tournament. Penfield will face Fairport (N.Y.) on June 1 for the title.

— Morristown (N.J.) and Westfield (N.J.) begin a collision course with the start of the sectional tournament. Morristown is the top seed in North Jersey Group 4. They have won 12 of 13 games, including a defeat of Westfield. Westfield is the No. 2 seed and comes off a 9-6 win over Moorestown (N.J.) to move up in the rankings. Sectionals begin today. The super bracket also includes a ranked Ridgewood (N.J.) team that Westfield and Morristown both beat by a goal apiece in the regular season.

— Moorestown is the No. 1 seed for the South Jersey Group 3 state tournament. They host Triton (N.J.) today in the first round.

— Nyack (N.Y.) is the top seed for the Section 1 Class B tournament. They’ll host Mahopac (N.Y.) in the semifinals Friday. The finals are at home on June 2. 

— Suffern (N.Y.) is the top seed in Section 1 Class A. They face Mamaroneck (N.Y.) in the semifinals Saturday. The final is June 3.

— In the regional updates, Suffern is new in the Northeast Top 10. Manchester Valley takes the top spot in the Mid-Atlantic with West Chester Henderson second now. Chapel Hill (N.C.) moves into the South Region rankings. York (Ill.) earns a spot in the Midwest Region. And state champion Park City (Utah) is the new No. 10 in the West.
