Duke Club and BYU were among the top finishers at the 29th Santa Barbara Shootout as the WCLA season got underway in full force, Feb. 16-18, in California. The Blue Devils and Cougars both finished 4-0 in the Air Division, comprising the 20 Division I teams at the event. St. Mary’s (3-0) also finished undefeated.
After posting wins over Miami (Ohio), Utah, and Oregon State, unranked Duke capped its weekend with a marquee victory, 14-13 in overtime, over No. 14 Colorado Club. Meanwhile, No. 12 BYU registered wins over UC Santa Barbara, UConn, Grand Canyon and No. 8 Virginia Club. The Cavaliers were one of five Division I teams to finished with 3-1 records, with a victory over preseason No. 2 Colorado State highlighting its resume.
In the Mountain Division (Division II teams), UC San Diego and Pepperdine both finished with 3-0 records. Two-time defending national champion Denver Club also finished 3-0 in its games against Division II squads, but dropped a 14-12 decision against Division I St. Mary’s. Stanford Club, Cal State San Marcos and Chico State also finished with 3-1 records D-II play.
