Fly Like a Pro: 5 Must-Haves for Lacrosse Players on the Go
Getting to travel for lacrosse is a life goal and luxury for many of today’s professional players. The ability to meet new people, see the world and experience new cultures is an unforgettable ride.
But two things can be true. Traveling for lacrosse is a life goal and a grind. Living out of a suitcase, dealing with delays and being away from family can take its toll. Products don’t solve everything, but they do help them feel more organized, comfortable and like their whole selves while they’re on the road. That counts for a lot.
We spoke with five pros about their travel hacks and conveniences that make flying easier.
TOP GUM
Extra Spearmint Sugar-Free Chewing Gum
$11.88 per 10-pack (15 count) on Amazon
Peek in Ally Kennedy’s backpack, and you’re sure to find one thing.
“I have become the person who always has gum on them — Extra Spearmint,” Kennedy said. “I love chewing it on a plane and when I warm up. It’s a pregame superstition, and it’s almost relaxing.”
It’s also common knowledge within the USA Lacrosse orbit, and Kennedy has one highly regular customer.
“Charlotte [North] has become one of the most frequent people to ask me for gum,” Kennedy said with a laugh. “I’m always just dealing out gum sticks.”
THE WRITE THING
Moleskin Notebook
$25.95 on Amazon
There’s little offseason for Tom Schreiber, who plays for the U.S., the Utah Archers of the Premier Lacrosse League and the Toronto Rock of the National Lacrosse League. But Schreiber uses his travel time intentionally.
“I like being disconnected,” he says. “I never get the WiFi. I’m either reading, listening or planning something.”
When he’s planning, he cracks open a Moleskine notebook. The classic, streamlined book comes in hard and soft covers and includes bookmarks, so he doesn’t have to remember where he left off when he touches down.
LEG ROOM
Abercrombie High Rise Sunday Wide Leg Sweat Set
$60 sweatpants/$70 hoodie at Abercrombie & Fitch
Ally Mastroianni could live in this fleece sweat set with first-class leg room.
“It is the softest, most comfortable thing I've ever worn in my life,” she raved. “I have it in two colors and wear it whenever I am traveling. I like to put the hood on when I sleep on the plane.”
SECOND BATHROOM
Lexus Toiletry Kit
$51 at the Lexus Merchandise Store
PLL players received Dopp kits from Lexus during the All-Star Weekend, but the brand also has toiletries bags that anyone can get their hands on.
“It’s a nice leather kit — plenty of pockets,” said Jack Hannah, who plays year-round with the PLL’s Philadelphia Waterdogs and the NLL’s Las Vegas Desert Dogs. “We needed that because you pretty much have to bring a second bathroom with you on the road.”
MID-AIR RECOVERY
Incrediwear Leg Sleeve
$105 on Amazon
Taylor Moreno has experienced knee injuries, including a two-year recovery from back-to-back ACL tears in high school. She uses travel time to give her leg a little extra TLC with Incrediwear, which has a form-fitting fabric and 3D weave design to soothe pain, reduce inflammation and boost blood flow.
“I travel with Incrediwear for recovery and compression,” she said. “I use it for proactive recovery.”
Justin Feil
Justin Feil grew up in Central PA before lacrosse arrived. He was introduced to the game while covering Bill Tierney and Chris Sailer’s Princeton teams. Feil enjoys writing for several publications, coaching and running and has completed 23 straight Boston Marathons. Feil has contributed to USA Lacrosse Magazine since 2009 and edits the national high school rankings.
