What a day for Denison.
The Big Red came from behind to earn their first-ever win over Franklin & Marshall, and they picked a good time to do it. In Saturday's round-of-16, Denison erased a two-goal deficit in the fourth quarter and scored the final three goals to beat the Diplomats 16-15.
The Big Red advance to the Division III women's quarterfinals on Sunday against Gettysburg.
Denison, which was 0-4 against F&M in its history, faced a 10-5 deficit after Lauren Pittman scored for the Diplomats with 9:04 left in the first half. The Big Red erased that deficit — and then some — before halftime by scoring the final six tallies of the second quarter.
Sydney Lavin then opened the third quarter with a score to put Denison ahead 12-10.
Franklin & Marshall then surged, scoring five of the next six goals to take a 15-13 lead with 11:32 to go. Lavin answered with the next two, knotting things at 15, then Anna DeVuono buried a player-up goal for a 16-15 lead.
But there was still 5:20 to play. Julianne Henigan saved a free position attempt with 1:50 left, representing F&M's best look at a goal in the final minutes.
