Abby Thorne, 24, has been named the head coach at Coastal Carolina, where she was an assistant coach last season. The Pitt graduate is the now the youngest head coach in Division I women's lacrosse, according to the press release announcing her hire.
A captain and four-year player at Pitt, Thorne graduated as the program leader in caused turnovers (54), ground balls (92) and games started (68). She started every game during Pitt's inaugural season in 2022.
Thorne was most recently on the field for Australia in the World Lacrosse Women's Championship in Tokyo, helping the Aussies reach the quarterfinals. She helped the U19 team win a bronze medal in 2019 and the sixes team win a bronze medal in The World Games last year.
Coastal Carolina is coming off a 10-8 season and a fifth-straight berth in the Atlantic Sun championship game. Thorne worked mostly with the Chanticleer defense.
