Virginia Tech picked up one of the biggest wins in program history, knocking off No. 6 Syracuse 14-11 on Saturday in Blacksburg, Va. It was just the second win ever for Virginia Tech against the Orange in 19 career meetings and its first win over a ranked team this season.
More importantly, the victory keeps Virginia Tech in sole possession of eighth place in the ACC. The ACC will only invite eight of its 12 teams to the tournament and the victory moves Tech to 3-5 in the league, one game ahead of Pittsburgh. The Hokies beat Pitt, 11-10, earlier this season.
The Hokies (9-7) led from start to finish with junior midfielder Mia Pozzi scoring all four of her goals in the first half. A free position goal by Maggie Flanagan with just eight seconds left in the first half gave Virginia Tech an 8-4 halftime lead.
Syracuse strung together three straight goals in the third quarter to pull within 9-7, but Lauren Render and Sophia Trahan closed out the third quarter scoring to give the Hokies a four-goal cushion.
Render, a junior midfielder out of Georgia, had a monster game for the Hokies, scoring seven goals – the third time she has netted at least seven goals this season. She leads the team with 47 goals this season. Tech goalie Aaliyah Jones, a grad transfer from Stony Brook, made 13 saves to earn the win.
Emma Ward had a team-high five points for Syracuse (9-6, 5-3 ACC) on two goals and three assists with both of her goals coming in the fourth quarter. Mileena Cotter added a hat trick.
No. 11 Yale fell behind No. 17 Penn 4-0 out of the gate and trailed by as many as five goals in the second half before coming back to beat the Quakers 10-9 in four overtimes.
Jenna Collignon led the Bulldogs (10-3, 3-2 Ivy) with three goals and scored the game-winner in overtime after forcing a turnover on the clear and weaving through heavy traffic. Sky Carrasquillo and Ashley Newman each added two goals and Caroline Burt had a goal and two assists.
