Program builder Meg Decker is stepping down as the head coach of the Xavier women’s lacrosse team, the university announced Tuesday.
Decker, who had previous stops as a head coach at Hartford and assistant at Virginia Commonwealth when those schools launched new teams, was hired four years ago to get the Musketeers off the ground. They’re 10-34 in three seasons but did pick up their first Big East victory Saturday, defeating Butler 12-11 in overtime in the season finale.
“We appreciate Meg and her staff for their work the last four years, and we are grateful for her role in starting Xavier’s women’s lacrosse program,” athletic director Greg Christopher said. “We collectively thank Meg for her efforts and wish her the best moving forward.”
“Over the last four years, the foundation of this program has been forged through the dedication of many,” said Decker, applauding the work of assistant coaches Kirkland Lewis, Margaret Wolford and Amanda Monahan for strides made this year. “Thank you to my players and the families who have supported this program. I am deeply grateful for you. We have accomplished so much, and I will undoubtedly always be a proud Xavier lacrosse supporter, as I have been since day one.”
Christopher said a national search for Decker’s successor is underway.
