Izzy Scane deposited six goals and Madison Doucette (16 saves) stopped 59.3 percent of the shots she faced in the New York Charging's 18-11 win over the top-seeded California Palms in the WLL Championship Series title game Sunday at The St. James in Springfield, Va.
The Palms received a bye through the semifinals and presumably had fresh legs coming into the title game. On the flip side, the Charging played a difficult semifinal against the Boston Guard on Saturday.
The Charging led 6-2 after the first quarter, giving itself a small cushion to withstand a resurgent second quarter by the Palms. But after going into the halftime break with a 9-7 lead, the Charging watched as the Palms cut it to 9-8 just out of the intermission.
New York responded with the next eight goals spread across the third and fourth quarters, putting the game firmly in its control. Doucette helped in that regard, of course. She was the tournament's top goalie, compiling double-digit saves in every game of the tournament.
The Charging offense was balanced, with Emily Hawryschuk contributing five goals and one assist and Meg Carney adding three goals and two assists.
The tournament's top offensive award went to Boston's Charlotte North, who earned the Golden Stick Award with 22 scoring points.
