NORTHEAST
Matt Mayfield, Somers (N.Y.)
In his final high school game, Matt Mayfield ensured a first for Somers. The senior faceoff specialist was dominant, guiding the Tuskers to a 19-11 win over Jamesville-DeWitt (N.Y.) in the New York State Class C final. It is Somers’ first state title.
The Wesleyan commit helped Somers erase an early 2-0 deficit by winning 32 of 34 faceoffs, despite facing a long pole throughout the game. Mayfield also scored two goals and had four assists to secure the historic win.
“Matt Mayfield is a special talent,” Somers coach Jordan Hirsch told Lohud.com. “He’s an incredibly hard worker. He’s unflappable, just the best kid. I couldn’t be happier for him. Matt deserves all the accolades he’s getting.”

Box came off scoring five goals and an assist in a 14-3 semifinal win over Twin Valley (Pa.). The state title was the third in a row for the Tigers, who won their final eight games after a 10-6 start. Box has been a big part of that success. He will graduate as the program’s all-time points leader with 391 points on 286 goals and 105 assists. He finished this season with 83 goals and 29 assists.
