Huge wins by Bayport-Blue Point (N.Y.) and Summit (N.J.) affected the top tier of the latest USA Lacrosse Public High School Girls’ National Top 25, while three additional New York teams broke into the rankings with state tournament wins.
New No. 2 Bayport-Blue Point became the first team to defeat Nyack (N.Y.) this year. Ava Meyn had five goals and one assist, Aubrie Eisfeld had three goals and one assist, Erika Kreuscher had two goals and two assists, Kailey Bruckner scored twice and Sara Richardt added one goal and two assists in the New York State Class C regional final.
Two weeks ago, the Phantoms avenged their lone loss of the season when they beat Rocky Point (N.Y.). The win over Nyack ran their winning streak to 10.
No. 5 Nyack ends a memorable season at 19-1.
In New Jersey, Parker Febo scored with 43 seconds left in overtime to give No. 4 Summit (N.J.) a 9-8 win over former No. 3 Chatham (N.J.) in the Group 3 final on Tuesday. The win avenged the Hilltoppers' only in-season loss.
It was a terrific back-and-forth game, with Summit establishing a 6-4 halftime lead before Chatham scored three straight goals to take the lead. The Cougars had an 8-7 lead with 3:11 left on a goal from Nikki Grossman before the Hilltoppers' Emma Busam forced overtime with a goal with 1:38 to go. Febo’s OT goal finished off a hat trick. She also had four draw controls. Chatham got four goals from Annie Irish and a goal and three assists from Peyton Furst.
Summit will face No. 12 Moorestown (N.J.) in the Group 3 state championship Saturday. The Quakers jumped out to a 10-3 halftime lead on their way to a 12-7 win over Cherry Hill West (N.J.) in the South Jersey Group 3 final Tuesday. Mae Murphy filled a stat sheet with three goals, two assists and six draw controls. Katie Bianco, Charlotte Lynch, Ella Brittain and Meghan Hock all had two goals apiece. Hock also dished out an assist, and Avery Adeli had a goal and two assists.
The three newcomers are all still alive in the New York state tournaments. No. 21 Suffern (N.Y.) moves into the rankings after an 11-9 win over now-No. 25 Huntington (N.Y.) in the Class A quarterfinals. It was just Huntington’s third loss of the year. Suffern faces Ithaca (N.Y.) in the semifinals Friday.
A win would send Suffern up against either another newcomer, No. 22 Penfield (N.Y.), or No. 7 Cicero-North Syracuse (N.Y.). Penfield was a decisive winner over Orchard Park (N.Y.) in their quarterfinal matchup, prevailing 18-5 behind a hat trick and three assists from Peyton Rothfuss and a hat trick and assist from Reegan Sercu. It’s their first trip to the semifinals since 2018.
New No. 23 Jamesville-DeWitt (N.Y.) has a tough task in its Class C semifinal when it takes on Bayport-Blue Point. The Red Rams come off a 14-12 quarterfinal win over Honeoye Falls-Lima. Held scoreless in the first quarter and trailing by two at halftime, Jamesville-DeWitt erupted for an 8-2 third-quarter advantage to take control.
No. 3 Darien (Conn.) will play for its second state title in three years. The Blue Wave will face New Canaan (Conn.) on Sunday in the Class LL championship. New Canaan needed overtime to get by Wilton (Conn.). Darien dismantled Ridgefield (Conn.) 17-5 after scoring eight unanswered goals in the third quarter in the other semifinal.
Mia Wainwright scored with 12 seconds left to give No. 13 Springfield-Delco (Pa.) a 7-6 win over No. 20 Conestoga (Pa.) in the 3A state tournament semifinals Tuesday. It was the third time this season the Cougars beat Conestoga, following 10-5 and 10-6 wins earlier in the season.
This time, Springfield had to rebound from an early 5-0 deficit. The Cougars still trailed 6-4 late when Maddie Kane scored her third goal of the game, and then Allie Hunter tied it with 2:30 left. Springfield faces Bishop Shanahan (Pa.) in the state final Saturday.
No. 15 Garden City (N.Y.) stayed hot with an easy 18-5 win over Yorktown (N.Y.) in the Class B the class quarterfinals. They take on Minisink Valley (N.Y.) Friday in the semifinals.
No. 18 Cold Spring Harbor (N.Y.) overwhelmed Pleasantville (N.Y.) 21-5 in the Class D quarterfinals to set up a game against South Jefferson (N.Y.) for a chance at a finals berth. South Jefferson’s only loss came against Cicero-North Syracuse.
After falling to Loyola (Ill.) in the regular season, No. 24 New Trier (Ill.) followed up a one-goal semifinal win after an epic comeback against Hinsdale Central (Ill.) with a late rally to force overtime where they knocked off Loyola for their second state championship in four years.
