No. 1 Manchester Valley (Md.) leads a top eight that is unchanged while three teams enter the second half of this week's USA Lacrosse Public High School Girls’ National Top 25.
Manchester Valley completed its season undefeated. The Class 2A state championship win was its most competitive score yet — and the Mavericks won by eight goals over Century (Md.). Over 19 games this season, Manchester Valley held a 338-54 advantage.
No. 2 Nyack (N.Y.) is perched to kick off its state tournament run, and it’s tournament time soon for No. 3 Chatham (N.J.) and No. 4 Darien (Conn.).
This week is proof enough of how the state tournaments affect rankings.
No. 18 Upper Dublin (Pa.) avenged its only loss of the season with a win over Penncrest (Pa.) in the district playoffs, then stopped former No. 23 Radnor (Pa.). Its district run continues against private school Bishop Shanahan (Pa.), a team that has not lost to a public school yet.
Seeded sixth, No. 19 Marriotts Ridge (Md.) avenged a 14-9 regular-season loss to No. 20 Severna Park (Md.) by pulling an 11-10 upset over the No. 1 seed in the Class 3A state championship on Wednesday.
New No. 24 Cold Spring Harbor (N.Y.) is 14-3 heading into its state tournament. The Seahawks have beaten Huntington (N.Y.) and Manhasset (N.Y.) this year.
No. 9 Cambridge (Ga.) and No. 10 Milton (Ga.) each closed out tremendous seasons with state championships in their respective divisions. Both were dominant again with Milton claiming its 18th state title in 20 straight championship appearances.
No. 14 Coronado (Calif.) capped its unbeaten season with a section championship. After beating Cathedral Catholic (Calif.) by a goal in one of their toughest regular-season games and 14-10 on their Senior Night, the Lady Islanders jumped out to an 11-0 lead and won the third meeting, 16-4, to take the Open Division crown.
At the region level, there were four newcomers. In addition to Cold Spring Harbor in the Northeast, Upper Dublin and Marriotts Ridge in the Mid-Atlantic, there’s now a second Hudson in the Midwest. Hudson (Wisc.) debuts at No. 10 thanks to a 14-0 start in which it has outscored teams 205-71, even with two one-goal wins over Gentry/Mounds Park Academy (Minn.).
There is plenty of must-see action still ahead beginning Thursday when national No. 11 Broadneck (Md.) plays Urbana (Md.) in the Maryland public Class 4A state final.
