Victor (N.Y.) Wins State Title, Enters Public High School Girls' Top 25
New York and New Jersey state tournament outcomes forged the latest USA Lacrosse Public High School Girls’ National Top 25.
Only one newcomer enters the fray this week. No. 11 Victor (N.Y.) picked up a 12-9 win over No. 18 Garden City (N.Y.) to capture the New York State Class B championship after winning the previous two rounds by a combined 26 goals.
They were just one of the state championship squads to add a final win to their resume. No. 2 Bayport-Blue Point won the NYS Class C championship, 17-7 over Queensbury (N.Y.), to cap an impressive run. The Phantoms lost just once all year and avenged that one loss.
In a great rivalry finish, No. 3 Darien (Conn.) edged New Canaan (Conn.) 6-5 in the CIAC Class LL championship on Anna Von Kennel’s goal with less than five minutes to go. It’s the program’s 21st state title.
No. 4 Summit got more heroics from Parker Febo. Only days after her overtime winner in the semifinals upset No. 6 Chatham (N.J.), she was up to it again. This time, the senior midfielder scored with one second left in regulation for a one-goal win over No. 16 Moorestown in the Group 3 state championship game.
Penfield (N.Y.) moved up to No. 12 after dispatching No. 22 Suffern (N.Y.) for the NYS Class A crown. Penfield hasn’t lost since a midseason defeat at the hands of Victor. They went through No. 23 Cicero-North Syracuse (N.Y.) in the semifinals.
No. 13 Springfield-Delco (Pa.) pulled away with six of the final seven goals to win 10-5 over Bishop Shanahan (Pa.) in the PIAA 3A championship game. The Cougars lost once all season.
