What. A. Game.

Dickinson stunned previously undefeated Salisbury Sunday night in the third round of the NCAA Division III men’s lacrosse tournament, with Luke Whalen delivering the overtime dagger after the Dickinson defense held strong for the 80-second possession on the other end to being extra time.

Dickinson advances to the quarterfinals with an 11-10 win. Salisbury entered 20-0 and was considered a favorite to win another Division III title. Those hopes are over, even though the Sea Gulls mounted a late comeback.

With the Red Devils ahead 10-8, Ty Keaton found Riley Strub to make it 10-9 with 3:12 to play. With 53 seconds left, after a vicious ground ball battle, Michael Leahy deposited the equalizer.

Dickinson won the next faceoff but coughed it up. The Red Devils’ Ethan Ackerman forced Brice Bromwell into a turnover with next to no time on the clock, leading to overtime.

Blake Malamphy won the opening draw of overtime, prompting a Salisbury timeout. Strub’s shot out of the timeout was saved by Rocco Bognet, but he got another opportunity after the ball rebounded to Leahy. Dickinson worked it around to find Strub, who missed wide. Then Connor Herraiz missed wide. Then Leahy missed high.

Finally with the ball in hand, Dickinson cleared and called timeout with 1:59 left in the overtime. After another ground ball battle won by Preston Boyd, Whalen dodged and hit the winner while streaking toward the crease.
