Joey Seivold, a former U.S. national team player and member of the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, needs support as he continues to recover from a stroke he suffered last year. Family and friends have started a GoFundMe to help support his rehabilitation.

Seivold suffered the stroke last April and underwent several procedures and an intensive neuro-rehabilitation program in Chicago before returning home to his home in Tampa. According to the GoFundMe, he and his wife, Joan, continue to seek the best outpatient therapies for his ongoing recovery and are hoping to establish a viable, supplemental rehabilitation program in their home.

“I wish everyone could witness how far Joey has come and what a warrior he has been throughout,” said Joan, an All-American soccer player at North Carolina. “He has been to the very, very edge, hanging by his fingernails and has found a way back! It is his strong will for sure, but it is also the will, the love and positive thoughts and prayers of so many, many kind souls who care about him and our family, and we are eternally grateful.”

Inducted as a truly great player in the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame Class of 2020, Joey Seivold was a four-time All-American midfielder at the University of North Carolina, earning first team honors in 1984 and 1985, and honorable mention recognition in 1983 and 1987. He also earned all-ACC honors in 1984 and 1985. A two-time team captain, Seivold helped the Tar Heels capture the 1985 ACC title and he received the ACC’s Scholar-Athlete Award in 1986. He was also selected to play in the North-South All-Star Game following his senior season in 1987. Seivold was named to the ACC’s 50th Anniversary Team in 2002.

Internationally, Seivold played for the 1986 U.S. National Team that captured the world championship in Canada.

Following his playing career, he stayed involved in the sport, leading the teams at Durham Academy (N.C.) and The Blake School (Minn.) to a combined 11 state championships as a coach. His sons, Johnny (North Carolina) and Jordan (Navy), both played collegiate lacrosse. He most recently served as the headmaster at The Benjamin School in Florida.

Originally from Parkton, Md., Seivold was previously inducted into the USA Lacrosse Greater Baltimore Chapter Hall of Fame (2006) and USA Lacrosse North Carolina Chapter Hall of Fame (2008). He was the second member of his family in the National Hall of Fame, joining his namesake father, Joseph, who was inducted in 1979.
