HOBART RELEASE
GENEVA, N.Y. — Hobart Head Lacrosse Coach Greg Raymond announced his intention to resign today following 12 years of leading the Statesmen. He will remain on staff while Hobart conducts a national search for his replacement.
"After much reflection, and 12 rewarding seasons, I've decided to step down as head lacrosse coach at Hobart College," said Raymond. "I feel it's necessary to be more present for my family and embrace the next chapter of my career. I'm excited to transition into a new role outside of professional coaching and am grateful for the support that Hobart and William Smith continues to provide to me. As I step away from the Division I coaching landscape, I want to assure you that my connection to Hobart and William Smith remains strong. I'm committed to supporting this program – as a fan, mentor and proud member of the Hobart lacrosse family – for years to come.
"It's been an honor to lead this incredible program. My family and I will always be grateful for our time with our countless, outstanding student-athletes, our stalwart parents and friends, and our many engaged, selfless alumni who comprise our proud Hobart lacrosse nation."
The 20th head coach in Hobart lacrosse's 123 season history, Raymond led Hobart to 77 wins, the most in the program's Division I era and fifth overall. His players earned 44 all-conference nods, including 2017 Northeast Conference Player of the Year Frank Brown '17. Brown also garnered USILA All-America honorable mention following his senior season.
Raymond's Statesmen were all-stars in the classroom as well. He mentored student-athletes that earned 138 conference all-academic accolades and six USILA Scholar All-Americans.
"Coach Raymond has been an unbelievable asset to Hobart lacrosse and HWS Athletics during his tenure leading the program," said Brian Miller, associate vice president and director of athletics. "A highly effective leader, mentor and role model for the hundreds of Statesmen he's recruited and coached over the past 12 years, his contribution to the legacy of Hobart lacrosse is immeasurable. I'm thankful for all his efforts, teamwork and energy along with the friendship we've developed through the years."
Raymond guided Hobart to seven Northeast Conference Tournament appearances, winning the NEC regular season championship in 2017. A year earlier, Raymond's Statesmen won the NEC Tournament as the No. 3 seed upsetting top-seeded Saint Joseph's 11-7 on the Hawks' home field to clinch the program's 26th NCAA tournament appearance. The 2016 Statesmen finished the season with a 10-7 record, which at the time was the most wins for Hobart in a Division I season.
In 2019, Raymond led Hobart to an 8-1 start to the season, including a six-game winning streak. It was the longest winning streak by the Statesmen since winning eight in a row to start the 1998 season. Hobart finished the season with an 11-5 record, the most wins in the program's Division I era and the most by any Hobart team since 1994. The 2019 Statesmen were ranked as high as No. 19, their highest ranking under Raymond's leadership.
Hobart led the nation in scoring during the COVID shortened 2020 season. The Statesmen averaged an eye-popping 19.6 goals per game.
In 2022, Hobart scored its biggest upset of the Raymond era, knocking off Lehigh 14-13. At the time, the Mountain Hawks were ranked 16th in the coaches poll and 13th in the media poll.
A 2005 graduate of Johns Hopkins, Raymond served as an assistant coach for nine seasons at Princeton and Drexel before taking the lead at Hobart.
Raymond is married to Michelle Steigerwald Raymond, a 2004 graduate of Hobart and William Smith and a former Heron lacrosse player. They have three children.
