Le Moyne has hired one lacrosse legend to succeed another.
The Syracuse, N.Y., school is set to hire Syracuse lacrosse great Casey Powell as its next head coach, sources have confirmed with USA Lacrosse Magazine.
Brent Axe of the Syracuse Post-Standard first reported the news Thursday after rumors swirled around Powell's candidacy for several days.
A four-time All-American and two-time National Player of the Year at Syracuse, Powell enjoyed an equally prolific professional career. He played for the U.S. National Team in 1998 and 2006, won MVP honors in both box (NLL 2010) and field (MLL 2014) lacrosse and widely promoted the game through endorsements, Powell Brothers Lacrosse and the Casey Powell Lacrosse Foundation.
Inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2017, Powell has dabbled in coaching before, primarily at the high school level. His collegiate coaching experience consists of separate one-year stints as an assistant at Cortland and Jacksonville, the latter post coming in 2016.
Le Moyne has fully transitioned to Division I after winning six Division II championships under Dan Sheehan, the Dolphins' head coach who stepped down in June after 29 years at the helm.
Le Moyne is 16-25 in its first three seasons as a Division I program.
Matt DaSilva is the editor in chief of USA Lacrosse Magazine. He played LSM at Sachem (N.Y.) and for the club team at Delaware. Somewhere on the dark web resides a GIF of him getting beat for the game-winning goal in the 2002 NCLL final.
