Maybe categorizing Duke's 11-7 win over Syracuse last weekend as an upset isn't entirely accurate, but if you look at it from a Top 20 rankings perspective, the Orange entered as favorites.
But the friendly confines of Koskinen Stadium helped Duke dispatch Syracuse — as did the performance of graduate transfer Eric Malever, who came to Durham from Maryland to stabilize the Blue Devil offense.
Malever tied his season high with five goals (on eight shots) and deposited three of those goals during a game-changing 6-0 run for Duke spanning the second and third quarters that put Duke ahead 11-4.
For his effort, Malever is the USA Lacrosse Division I Men's Player of the Week.
DIVISION II
Michael Mattaliano, Lander
When your team is gunning for an upset, it certainly does not hurt to have your season-best performance. Mattaliano, a junior from Indiana, did that for Lander, depositing a career-high five goals (on 100 percent shooting) with one assist in a 14-9 upset of Flagler.
DIVISION III
Teddy Scarborough, Franklin & Marshall
Stepping up in upset victories seems to be the formula this week for earning Player of the Week honors. Scarborough, a sophomore, made 19 saves in a 14-12 win over Swarthmore. His performance allowed the Diplomats to score eight of the final 11 goals to rally for the win and clinch a Centennial playoff berth.
