Can anyone stop Tufts?
The two-time reigning NCAA Division III men’s lacrosse champions rolled into the national championship game for the fourth straight season, exploding for 19 first-half goals in a 23-7 victory over Wesleyan.
Tufts will meet RIT, a 16-12 victor over Bowdoin on Saturday, in the national championship game next Sunday at the University of Virginia. Ten of the last 12 NCAA Division III championship games have included at least one of either RIT or Tufts, including the 2024 final when the Jumbos outscored RIT 18-14 to claim the national title.
Tufts (21-1) left little doubt about a return to the finals with Sunday night’s effort. All-American Jack Regnery scored 17 seconds into the game, kicking off a 6-0 start to the game for the Jumbos. By the time the first quarter ended, Tufts had scored 11 goals.
Things didn’t change from there with Tufts taking a 19-5 halftime lead before holding Wesleyan to just two goals in the second half.
Regnery, last year’s NCAA Division III Player of the Year and a third-round pick of the Boston Cannons in the Premier Lacrosse League College Draft earlier this spring, led the onslaught with a season-high seven goals on just 10 shots. He added a pair of assists, giving him 117 points for the season.
Brooks Hauser added five goals and two assists and Chase Beyer and Peter Kraemer each scored four goals. Tufts won 26 of 34 faceoffs in the game with Lucas De La Paz seeing the most success with a 13 of 14 effort. Jack Old made seven saves while allowing just six goals to pick up the victory.
