Let’s play Goalie Frankenstein.

We asked our friends at Goaliesmith to build us the ultimate lacrosse goalie based on which attributes are most important in a netminder and who in the game today exhibits those qualities best.

Kat Buchanan starred at James Madison and plays professionally. Matt Gill played at St. Rose and has coached collegiately.

CLEARING

Delaney Sweitzer
Logan McNaney

From Syracuse to Northwestern, Sweitzer has been the driving force behind fast-paced transition. Her ability to see the deep ball immediately off the save or to time up a cross-field dime is unlike most. — KB

McNaney was pivotal to Maryland’s 2022 NCAA championship, making a ton of controlled saves and pushing transition. Whether it’s a settled clear in a tight window, a shot or a save-controlled rebound up-and-out, he’s efficient and smart in the clear.  — MG

HAND SPEED

Lexie Coldiron
Mike Gianforcaro

Coldiron’s ability to make low-percentage doorstop saves using her quick hands is extremely fun to watch and keeps Rutgers in games. — KB

Gianforcaro plays with an unorthodox wide stance that only he and a few other goalies can use. This makes it tougher to step, so the UNC goalie's hands have to get to everything. — MG

MECHANICS/FOOTWORK

Jocelyn Torres
Caleb Fyock

Torres plays a flatter style with strong lateral steps to the ball. She stays patient on fakes and times up inside shots with brilliance. Her athletic stance and balance allow her to make unlikely saves for Ohio State. — KB

Big Tasty has the ideal mechanics and footwork to thrive in today’s game. The Ohio State keeper plays with patience, poise, balance and efficiency. — MG

LACROSSE IQ

Meg Taylor
Blaze Riorden

One of the smartest goalies to grace the game, Taylor has become a brilliant coach. As a player, she was able to see two plays ahead, leading Maryland to two NCAA titles and becoming the first goalie ever to win the Tewaaraton. — KB

Riorden has the best IQ of any goalie to play the game. His ability to see plays develop is unmatched and likely attributed to his success as a field player in the NLL. With his offensive mind, he plays goalie two steps ahead. — MG

ATHLETICISM

Betty Nelson
Anderson Moore

If Nelson were ever to find herself out of position, she would likely still make the save. The UNC redshirt freshman’s raw athleticism is rare and fun to watch. She is quick outside the crease and flashy inside the crease. — KB

Moore makes creative plays outside the crease with his stick handling and interception ability. Georgetown gains several possessions a game just from his raw athleticism. He makes great shots look like routine saves. — MG

LEADERSHIP

Caylee Waters
Liam Entenmann

Leading by example and hyping up the room when needed, Waters has an energy and love for the game that is so refreshing. She never fails to make the women next to her feel seen and appreciated. If you have yet to see the viral presser of Waters after the inaugural WLL season, I recommend giving it a watch. — KB

Entenmann’s integrity, accountability and passion is such a galvanizing force. A great example from Notre Dame is when he sent Pat Kav an article before the 2023 national championship game after he sustained a hamstring injury during the semis. Kavanagh said it helped him focus and put his injury in the rear view. Entenmann goes above and beyond to help others when they need it most and because of it, he’s got two rings. — MG

CLUTCH GENE

Shea Dolce
Brett Dobson

Dolce’s last-second kick save to win the 2024 national championship for BC against Northwestern was as clutch as it gets — a save that reminds you of playing in your backyard as a kid.— KB

Dobson sealed the Utah Archers’ PLL championship repeat on a buzzer-beating save. In college, he carried St. Bonaventure, making big save after big save down the stretch in fourth quarters. — MG

SWAG

Madison Doucette
Connor Foley

Whether it’s shorts, leggings or sweatpants, Doucette always brings the heat. From the low bun to the flow, her style just keeps getting better with time. And she rocks the eye black like no other. Look good, feel good, play good.— KB

The baggy sweatpants, oversized sweatshirt and flow out the back of the helmet — just from a looks standpoint — are immaculate. Add on top of that the crazy, acrobatic and creative style with which Foley plays, and there isn’t a more swag goalie in the game today than the Brown sophomore. — MG
