Adelphi Survives, West Chester Beats Limestone in Women's D-II Round 2
West Chester, the No. 1 seed in its quadrant, held back a spirited effort by Limestone to keep its final season alive, as the Golden Rams downed the Saints 17-11 on Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Division II women's lacrosse tournament.
The Golden Rams moved to 19-0 on the strength of five goals and three assists from Keri Barnett and five goals and one assist from Kendall Fortune. Sydney Wasdick won 11 draws.
Limestone kept things close in the fourth quarter, cutting the West Chester lead to 13-9 on a goal from Sophie Shortio with 9:39 left. But West Chester responded with two of its own, extending the lead to 15-9 with just 4:40 remaining.
Shortino had three goals, and Keira Martin produced a team-high one goal and three assists in the final game in program history for Limestone.
KOLOMECHUK WINS IT LATE
Perhaps finding itself in a surprising back-and-forth battle with New Haven, Adelphi did not fall to the upset alert. After a furious final 30 seconds of regulation in which Adelphi took a one-goal lead and New Haven promptly tied it, Ashley Kolomechuk scored the golden goal in overtime to lift the Panthers to a 15-14 win.
The second half was all about runs as each side jockeyed to maintain its momentum. Caitlin Seleny (six) and Katie Schenk (four) combined for 10 goals for New Haven, which had lost 12-9 to Adelphi earlier this season.
Kolomechuk's five goals led Adelphi.
