Public high schools consistently produce highly competitive teams and standout lacrosse players across the nation.

Unlike private schools, which can draw talent from a broader region, public schools focus on local athletes, exceptional coaching and strong community backing to develop their programs. This creates a distinct dynamic in high school lacrosse, where schools must cultivate talent from within and sustain a culture of success year after year.

By focusing exclusively on public school programs, these USA Lacrosse National Top 25 and Regional Top 10 lists (also found here in our rankings hub) highlight the best teams that have built powerhouse rosters through local development and strong grassroots efforts. Presented by CWENCH Hydration, these are the top public high school boys’ lacrosse teams to open the 2026 season.

Compiled by USA Lacrosse writers with input from coaches around the country, these rankings will be updated weekly.

The release of the season's first rankings come even as some teams have yet to play a game. But several teams that have begun already have posted eye-opening results.

Start at the top, where No. 1 Radnor (Pa.) welcomed private power Choate (Conn.) on their spring break trip with an impressive two-goal win. No. 2 Garden City (N.Y.) had a decisive win in its opener. No. 3 Darien (Conn.) doesn't open its season of high expectations until April 5.

Several of the top tier publics have gone head-to-head and that's helped establish an early pecking order. Springfield-Delco (Pa.) picked up a big win over Broadneck (Md.). Urbana (Md.) defeated nine-time defending state champion Severna Park (Md.) in an overtime thriller. Massapequa (N.Y.) and Wantagh (N.Y.) are both off to 2-0 starts against strong in-state competition. Roswell (Ga.) went out of state to top Upper Arlington (Ohio) and won a key Georgia showdown against Lambert (Ga.). Wins over Langley (Va.), Yorktown (Va.) and Robinson (Va.) give Madison (Va.) the early lead to be Virginia's best.

There's plenty of great matchups ahead. This week, Radnor has to defend its top billing against a Summit (N.J.) squad that returns a ton from its state title while Highland Park (Texas) meets Torrey Pines (Calif.) in a huge cross-region showdown.
