Severna Park, Syosset Climb USA Lacrosse Public High School Boys' Rankings
Roswell (Ga.) and Severna Park (Md.) added to their state championship streaks while rankings newcomer Broadneck (Md.) will try to put a stop to Urbana's (Md.) streak in one of the best matchups ahead in this week’s USA Lacrosse Public High School Boys’ National Top 25, presented by CWENCH Hydration.
Roswell won its fourth straight Division 2 state championship, 17-14, over Milton (Ga.) behind six goals from Jackson Hardwick, five goals from Linkin Miller and five assists from Blake O’Neal. Its lone loss this season came against Ponte Vedra (Fla.).
Severna Park won its record 10th straight state Maryland public championship. The Falcons defeated Towson (Md.) for the third straight time in the Class 3A final, 15-2, behind four goals from Tyler Lawhorne and dominant play at the faceoff X from David Bates.
Broadneck (Md.) is back in the rankings after cruising into the Maryland 4A state final. It beat Bethesda (Md.) 23-7 in the quarterfinals and Montgomery Blair (Md.) 21-0 in the semifinals. Two of its losses came at the hands of Severna Park. Broadneck defeated Stephen Decatur (Md.) early in the season, and Stephen Decatur went on to upend previously ranked Kent Island (Md.) 9-4 in the Class 2A state final.
Broadneck's task is to upend Urbana for the Class 4A state championship. Urbana advanced with a 17-3 win over Leonardtown (Md.). They are trying for their third straight championship. The title game is a rematch of last year’s, won by Urbana, 5-2, over Broadneck.
Syosset (N.Y.) moved up significantly after an overtime win over ranked Massapequa (N.Y.). The two could meet again in the Nassau County Section VIII Class A finals. Syosset opens with Hicksville (N.Y.) while Massapequa gets Herricks (N.Y.) today in quarterfinal games as New York playoff action picks up.
Other notable developments:
— Garden City (N.Y.) will face either Long Beach (N.Y.) or Rosyln (N.Y.) in the Nassau County Section VIII Class B semifinals. The top-seeded Trojans won their 20th title last year.
— Manhasset (N.Y.) could stand in the way of a 21st title. They face Carey (N.Y.) in a quarterfinal game on the other side of the Class B bracket.
— Springfield-Delco (Pa.), Radnor (Pa.) and Downingtown West (Pa.) all advanced to the semifinals of Pennsylvania’s District 1 AAA playoffs. Top-seeded Downingtown West will host Radnor today and Springfield has Ridley (Pa.). The final is slated for May 27. .
— Summit (N.J.) is the No. 2 seed for the North Jersey Group 3 state tournament. The Hilltoppers takes on 15th-seeded Nutley (N.J.) in the first round after ending the regular season with a 15-4 win over Bergen Catholic (N.J.).
— Chatham (N.J.) will go for its eighth straight win after blowing by Shawnee (N.J.) 14-6 and West Morris (N.J.) 17-6 to close the regular season. The Cougars will open the North Jersey Group 3 state tournament as the top seed against Middletown North (N.J.) on May 28.
— Ridgewood (N.J.) will close the regular season against St. Joseph (Montvale, N.J.) today before turning their attention to the state tournament. They’ll host West Orange (N.J.) in the first round of the North Jersey Group 4 tournament.
— Cold Spring Harbor (N.Y.) is the top seed in the Nassau County Section VIII Class D playoffs. They play Oyster Bay (N.Y.) next week for the chance to play for the championship.
— Mamaroneck (N.Y.) is the top seed in the Section 1 Class A state tournament. They’ll be going for a third straight title. They don’t open until May 26 against the winner of Arlington (N.Y.) and Wappingers (N.Y.).
— Northport (N.Y.) is the top seed in the Suffolk County Section XI Class A bracket. They face William Floyd (N.Y.) in the quarterfinals May 22. Second-seeded Sachem North (N.Y.) and third-seeded Ward Melville (N.Y.) are on the other side of the bracket.
— Wantagh (N.Y.) opened the Nassau County Section VIII Class C tournament with a 24-3 win over Island Trees (N.Y.). They await the winner of Plainedge (N.Y.) and North Shore (N.Y.) in the semifinals May 27.
— Robinson (Va.) opens the Class 6 Region C tournament May 22 against Lake Braddock (Va.), a team it beat in the regular season, 14-4. The champion and runner-up of the region advance to the state tournament. Last year, Robinson lost in the region final.
— In the regional rankings, Torrey Pines (Calif.) won their section championship, 15-4, over La Costa Canyon (Calif.) to move to No. 1 in the West Region. Cherry Creek (Colo.) finished second in their state. Shawnee Mission East (Kan.) earned a championship to take a spot in the Midwest. And Broadneck takes the No. 10 ranking in the Mid-Atlantic.
