Summit Reaches Top Spot in USA Lacrosse Public High School Boys' Rankings
Manhasset (N.Y.) played spoiler with a win over previous No. 1 Garden City (N.Y.) to open the door for Summit (N.J.) to ascend to the top spot in this week's USA Lacrosse Public High School Boys’ National Top 25, presented by CWENCH Hydration.
In a week of hugely impactful games, there’s one newcomer in the rankings. Sachem North (N.Y.) upset Northport (N.Y.) 12-7 to win the Suffolk County Class A title. The Arrows will face Massapequa (N.Y.) in the Long Island championship after claiming their first county championship since the district split into North and East and the first Suffolk crown for a Sachem team, period, since 1995.
William Mondiello hit Tommy Leder for the game-winning goal with five seconds left in overtime for a 9-8 Manhasset win in the Nassau Class B championship. The win avenged a 14-6 regular-season loss to Garden City. Freshman Tommy Kasselakis had two goals and two assists for Manhasset, and Connor Sheerin posted a hat trick and an assist. Manhasset survived an early penalty in overtime to prevent Garden City's 21st Nassau title.
Summit moves to the top of the rankings ahead of a potential top-five matchup with Chatham (N.J.). The Hilltoppers face Scotch Plains-Fanwood (N.J.) for the third time this season, this time in the North Jersey, Group 3 semifinals today. Chatham already did its part, dismantling Randolph (N.J.) 16-4 in their semifinal Wednesday. The sectional final is June 9.
Cold Spring Harbor (N.Y.) continues to climb. The Seahawks won their 14th straight game to capture the Nassau Class D championship. Their undefeated run has come since the return of Dylan Reilly from injury. CSH got hat tricks from Colby Koeningsberger and Roy Testa while Alex Vitale went 15-for-16 on faceoffs to lead the Seahawks to their fifth straight county title. They’ll face Bayport-Blue Point (N.Y.) in the state tournament. Among their wins in their streak is an overtime win over Manhasset.
Other notable developments:
— Springfield-Delco (Pa.) and Radnor (Pa.) stayed on track for another showdown if both can make the state tournament final. Springfield faces Downingtown West (Pa.) in the AAA quarterfinals June 6 while Radnor takes on Shady Side Academy (Pa.) in another quarterfinal that day.
— Staples (Conn.) held off top-seeded New Canaan (Conn.) 10-9 for the FCIAC Championship. It’s the Wreckers’ second title in three years. An 8-1 run gave them a 10-4 lead before New Canaan made it interesting down the stretch.
— Ridgewood (N.Y.) won its first to North Jersey, Group 4 games by a combined 39-2 score. Things get tougher for the Maroon in the semifinals against Montclair (N.J.) today.
— Massapequa (N.Y.) was able to repeat as Nassau Class A champions with a 19-5 win over Syosset (N.Y.). Ryan Chabus won 18 of 26 faceoffs, and the three-headed monster of Nolan Wieczorek, Tyler Byrnes and Rocco Spallina combined for 14 goals and seven assists. They’ll face Sachem North on June 6.
— Mamaroneck (N.Y.) won their third straight Section 1 Class A championship, 18-2, over Scarsdale (N.Y.). They’ll take on Section 9 champion Monroe-Woodbury (N.Y.) on June 6.
— Wantagh (N.Y.) also earned a third straight title. Matthew Giacobello and Luke Martini both had hat tricks and Gianna Passaro made 15 saves in a 15-7 win over South Side (N.Y.). Wantagh faces Sayville (N.Y.) on June 6.
— Shawnee (N.J.) was dominant in its first two games in sectionals. They face Northern Burlington (N.J.) today in the South Jersey, Group 3 semifinals.
— Victor (N.Y.) kept its season going with a Section V Class B championship. The Blue Devils beat Pittsford (N.Y.) 14-12 for their third title in four years. Eli Ricci won 21 of 30 faceoffs and had a hat trick and an assist. Will Simpson was named tournament MVP. They toppled Section VI’s Orchard Park (N.Y.) 12-8 to advance to face Horseheads (N.Y.) on June 6 in the Class B quarterfinals. Manhasset is on the other side of the B bracket.
— In the regional rankings, Hudsonville (Mich.) debuts in the Midwest Region rankings. Similar to Manhasset, they avenged a big regular-season loss, and this one was even more dramatic. Hudsonville's only loss this season came at the hands of Rockford (Mich.) 18-5. The Eagles won the rematch, 10-8, in the Division 1 Region 1 championship. After wins over Hartland (Mich.) and Grand Ledge (Mich.), they'll face Detroit Catholic Central (Mich.) in the state championship June 6. Wantagh and Sachem North are newcomers in the Northeast Region after their championship wins.
