Darien, Sayville Girls Finish Unbeaten, Cement Top-Five Spots in National Top 25
Dynasties Darien (Conn.) and Sayville (N.Y.) went undefeated en route to state championships, cementing top-five spots in the USA Lacrosse High School Girls' National Top 25, presented by CWENCH Hydration.
Darien blew out rival New Canaan (Conn.) 13-4 in the CIAC Class LL final to clinch its 22nd state title and finish 21-0 — a record that includes impressive wins over preseason No. 1 St. Anthony's (N.Y.) and postseason No. 7 Sacred Heart Greenwich (Conn.).
Sayville finished 21-0 for the second time in three years, defeating Jamesville-Dewitt (N.Y.) 15-7 in the New York Class C final. Among the Golden Flashes' triumphs was an early-season win over Victor (N.Y.), which claimed its fifth consecutive Class B state title with a 13-5 win over Garden City (N.Y.).
It's not all about the bluebloods this week, however.
Huntington (N.Y.) powered past Suffern (N.Y.) and Penfield (N.Y.) to win its first-ever New York Class A championship. West Chester Henderson (Pa.) also claimed its first state title, defeating Conestoga (Pa.) for the third time this year.
Also this week:
— Cold Spring Harbor (N.Y.) comes in at No. 22 after defeating Penn Yan (N.Y.) for its third straight Class B state title. Victor, Cold Spring Harbor and Georgia powers West Forsyth (Ga.) and Milton (Ga.) are new to the Top 25.
— Garden City stopped Nyack (N.Y.) in the state semifinals, settling in at No. 23.
