Longtime Siena men’s lacrosse assistant Tim Cox has been named the 11th head coach in the program’s history and successor to the late Liam Gleason, who died last month from injuries sustained in an accident at his home.
“It is with great humility, honor and gratitude to be able to carry forth the legacy of Liam Gleason, and lead the Siena men's lacrosse program forward,” Cox said in a press release issued by the school Tuesday. “I've seen firsthand what can be accomplished when a program is built on positivity, trust and belief, and Coach Gleason's core values will continue to serve as the foundation for our future.”
Cox, 32, served on Gleason’s staff since 2019 and had been promoted to associate head coach in September. Like Gleason, he played for Scott Marr at UAlbany, the crosstown rival which defeated Siena in an NCAA tournament opening-round game last May. He got his coaching career started as a volunteer assistant for the Great Danes, then spent two seasons on the staff at Robert Morris before coming to Siena.
Cox’s knack for producing prolific offenses — the Saints’ 13.75 goals per game last year ranked eighth in Division I — was less a factor in his selection than how he has steered the team through tragedy.
“Leadership shows up in many different ways, and during his time at Siena Coach Cox has been a steady and trusted leader within our program,” Siena athletic director John D’Argenio said. “Over the past five weeks, he has led our program through the tragic loss of Coach Gleason with humility, empathy and compassion. Coach Cox is the right person to lead the program forward, and continue to grow what he and Coach Gleason built together over the past seven years.”
