Brunswick (Conn.) Ranked No. 1 in USA Lacrosse High School Boys' National Top 25
Brunswick (Conn.) has taken over the No. 1 spot in the USA Lacrosse High School Boys' National Top 25, presented by CWENCH Hydration.
Western Reserve (Ohio) defeated previously No. 1-ranked Culver Academy (Ind.) 10-5 in the Midwest Scholastic Lacrosse Association Tournament championship game, avenging its lone loss of the season and moving up to No. 2 in the national rankings.
Brunswick (13-2) has played arguably the toughest schedule in the country with wins over six teams ranked in the top 25, including No. 4 Lawrenceville (N.J.), No. 8 Malvern Prep (Pa.), No. 9 Delbarton (N.J.), No. 14 Hill School (Pa.), No. 16 Episcopal (Pa.) and No. 19 Taft (Conn.). That's not to mention victories against Hill Academy (Ontario), Darien (Conn.) and Staples (Conn.).
The Bruins' season-long gauntlet continues this week against No. 12 Avon Old Farms (Conn.) and No. 24 Salisbury (Conn.). Their two losses are against No. 5 Deerfield (Mass.) and No. 6 Loomis Chaffee (Conn.). They've won 10 straight overall.
Culver dropped to No. 3 and jumps right back into the melee with a huge matchup against Deerfield this week.
There are two new teams to the rankings. Salisbury has won four straight since an overtime loss to Lawrenceville. The Crimson Knights face a daunting schedule down the stretch with Taft, Brunswick and to close.
Haverford School (Pa.) fell in overtime to St. Anthony's (N.Y.), another tough finish for a school that has knocked off McDonogh (Md.), Don Bosco (N.J.) and Episcopal, but has the ability to play with anyone. The Fords face Episcopal again this week.
Other notable results:
— Garden City (N.Y.) made a big move in the rankings, thanks to a nearly 100-goal differential through 13 games.
— Delbarton (N.J.) defeated Summit (N.J.) in a battle of in-state powers that had far-reaching impact. The Green Wave followed it up with a 10-goal win over Chaminade (N.Y.).
— St. Sebastian's (Mass.) lost to Tabor (Mass.) and Governors Academy (Mass.) in a tough week.
— Losses by Culver, St. Sebastian's (Mass.) and Summit have left Holderness (N.H.) as the lone unbeaten remaining among nationally ranked teams. Holderness' last seven games have all been decided by at least 10 goals.
— Calvert Hall (Md.) could lock up the top seed in the MIAA A Conference with a win over Loyola Blakefield (Md.).
— Paul VI (Va.) secured the top seed for the WCAC. A loss to Good Counsel (Md.) dropped St. John's College (D.C.) out of the rankings.
— Malvern Prep has clinched at least a share of the Inter-Ac League title.
— Highland Park (Texas) takes on Dallas Jesuit (Texas) in the Class AA state semifinals this week.
