No. 1 Half Hollow Hills (N.Y.) Stays Unbeaten, Stays Atop Public Boys' Top 25
More state tournament results heavily influenced the latest USA Lacrosse Public High School Boys’ National Top 25. Two newcomers also joined the bottom portion of the rankings.
First, the top. All alone at No. 1 is Half Hollow Hills (N.Y.), which won a showdown of unbeatens against No. 13 West Genesee (N.Y.) to capture the program’s first New York State Class A championship. Anthony Raio scored six times, Zach Marco had four goals and Nick Haugen dished out four assists.
No. 3 Springfield-Delco (Pa.) controlled No. 4 Radnor (Pa.) in their third meeting of the season to capture the PIAA 3A state championship with a 6-4 win. It was their first 3A title after 2A crowns in 2016 and 2017.
No. 5 Garden City (N.Y.) overwhelmed formerly ranked Canandaigua (N.Y.) 14-5 for the NYS Class B championship. It’s the Trojans’ 10th state crown.
Garrett Ferguson’s goal with 2:06 left in overtime gave No. 8 Westfield (N.J.) an 8-7 win over No. 12 Summit (N.J.) in the Kirst Cup semifinals. The teams split their first two meetings of the season. Westfield faces Non-Public group champion Seton Hall Prep (N.J.) in the Kirst Cup championship game on Thursday.
No. 9 Staples (Conn.) finished its season on a high note. The Wreckers rode hat tricks from Tristan Schaefer and Adam Udell and Josh Marcus made 12 saves in a 7-6 win over No. 14 Darien (Conn.) in the CIAC Class LL championship game. It is Staples’ third state championship in the last four years.
No. 11 Somers (N.Y.) handed formerly ranked Jamesville-DeWitt (N.Y.) a 19-11 defeat for the New York Class C state championship. It was the first time in three games that Somers’ potent offense was held under 20 goals.
No. 16 Billerica (Mass.) needed every goal to edge Reading (Mass.) 17-16 in the state final. The win was their 22nd in a row.
No. 22 Penn Yan (N.Y.) is one newcomer after celebrating a New York Class D state championship. The Mustangs held off Chenango Forks (N.Y.) 11-8.
Moorestown (N.J.), which had been ranked much of the spring, saw its season ended in a one-goal loss to Shawnee (N.J.). But its results and competitiveness earn it the No. 25 spot.
