Maryvale Wins First IAAM Title in 23 Years, Earns Top-Five National Ranking
Maryvale (Md.) defeated Archbishop Spalding (Md.) 7-5 in the IAAM A championship game Friday at Tierney Field — its first title in the Maryland mega-conference since 2002 — to climb to No. 4 in this week's USA Lacrosse High School Girls' National Top 25.
Lainey Minderlein scored five goals, including the go-ahead tally 4:36 remaining and an empty-netter to ice the win. The Lions avenged two of their regular-season losses in their run to the championship, edging McDonogh (Md.) in overtime in the semifinals and then getting the last word against the Cavaliers.
The three teams ahead of Maryvale in the national rankings — No. 1 St. Anthony's (N.Y.), No. 2 Episcopal (Pa.) and No. 3 Nyack (N.Y.) — remain undefeated.
A top-10 matchup looms this week, with Episcopal taking on No. 9 Agnes Irwin (Pa.).
No. 10 Sacred Heart Greenwich (Conn.) returned to the rankings with a thrilling win over former No. 3 Darien (Conn.). Sacred Heart’s only losses have come against the top New Jersey team, No. 14 Chatham (N.J.), and in a penalty-filled game against Ridgefield (Conn.).
Cicero-North Syracuse (N.Y.) has emerged with a 12-1 start that includes knocking Victor (N.Y.) out of the rankings.
Stone Ridge (Md.) returned to the top 25 by winning its third straight conference crown, avenging an earlier loss to St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes (Va.).
The fourth team to enter the rankings pulled the biggest stunner. Lake Highland (Fla.) edged American Heritage-Delray (Fla.) for its first state title since 2022.
Cambridge (Ga.) and Milton (Ga.) play for their division titles this week.
Coronado (Calif.), still unbeaten as they head into the semifinals of their bracket, hold down the final spot in this week’s rankings. The Islanders own a key midseason win over St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes (Va.).
