Turns out that a nod over Florida State into the College Football Playoff wasn’t enough to convince Alabama quarterback Tyler Buchner to stay at ‘Bama — or stay in football altogether.

Joking aside — sorry, Florida State fans — Buchner has entered the transfer portal with the intention to play men’s lacrosse, as first reported by Matt Chandik and confirmed by countless other journalists around college sports.

Buchner transferred to Alabama after spending 2021-22 at Notre Dame, where he appeared in 13 games with three starts. He played in three games for the Crimson Tide this fall, going 8-for-19 with 61 yards and rushing three times for 20 yards and a touchdown.

According to Inside Lacrosse CEO Terry Foy, Buchner will finish the fall at Alabama before joining Notre Dame to play lacrosse there.

Buchner was once a Michigan lacrosse commit in the spring of 2017 out of Bishop’s School (Calif.). He played club for Mad Dog Lacrosse and West Coast Starz, with Ty Xanders of Prep Lacrosse recalling the summer circuit he tore up as a midfielder in 2021.

Buchner, who is 6-1 and 215 pounds, is hardly the first college football player to fall back in love with lacrosse again. But an Alabama quarterback? That’s a new one.
