The Binghamton, N.Y., lacrosse community is mourning the loss of youth coach and local firefighter John “JR” Gaudet, who tragically lost his life Wednesday night fighting a blaze in downtown Binghamton.
Gaudet, 40, was an 11-year veteran of the Binghamton Fire Department.
“JR always had a stick in his hand,” said Pebs Lawson, who grew up and played with Gaudet, in addition to serving as a fellow youth coach. “He was a great family man and a great role model for the kids. They all loved him. He was the one you wanted on your side. He had a heart of gold."
A native of Binghamton, Gaudet attended Binghamton High School and played lacrosse at Binghamton University in 2003 and 2004, before transferring to SUNY Cortland to play in 2007 and 2008. The Red Dragons finished as Division III national runners-up in both of Gaudet’s seasons with the program.
Gaudet, who is survived by his wife and three young children, also served the local community as a coach with Binghamton Youth Lacrosse, which issued the statement below following his tragic death:
Coach JR will be missed dearly. He spent countless hours volunteering his time coaching youth sports and promoting programs to get more kids out playing. He was truly committed to making our community a better place for our kids. Rest in peace Coach, and know your players will carry on your legacy for years to come.
The Binghamton Fire Department also issued a statement:
It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the Binghamton Fire Department announces the passing of Firefighter John “JR” Gaudet in the line of duty. JR embodied what it means to be a firefighter — fearless, dedicated, and always putting others before himself. His infectious smile, unwavering positivity, and relentless work ethic made him a brother to all who had the honor of serving alongside him. He was the kind of firefighter you could always count on, the one who would have your back no matter the situation.
A GoFundMe for Gaudet’s family has been established.
