Wednesday evening’s first-round game between Flagler and Concordia Irvine couldn’t have been much closer.
The sides traded goals from the very first score of the game — a Jack Lepore finish assisted by Matt Carresi. Flagler answered it. Then CUI answered back. And so on, and so forth.
That lasted all the way through regulation. Trace McDonald scored to knot the score at 6 with 6:03 left in the fourth quarter, then Flagler broke the goal-trading streak when Griffin Moore netted the overtime winner, sending the Saints into the second round of the NCAA Division II men’s lacrosse tournament with a 7-6 win.
Moore, McDonald and Ben Nyberg each scored twice for Flagler, which is in just its sixth year as a program.
In the day’s only other first-round game, Anderson steamrolled Barton 24-12. Radyn Badraun led the Trojans with five goals and five assists, but Cole Sparks was close behind with four goals and five assists. Jacob Kirchhofer also scored five goals. Anderson won 30 of 39 faceoffs.
