Division III Recap: Scranton Wins in OT, Lopsided Scores Everywhere Else

The first day of the NCAA Division III men’s lacrosse tournament was rife with lopsided scores — except for one game.

Scranton needed overtime to top SUNY Maritime, advancing to Saturday’s second round on Quinn Carson’s tally with 1:02 remaining in the extra period.

Carson was one of a quartet of Scranton players with a hat trick, joining Brendan Donohue, Kyle Holmes and Jason Kozak. Donohue assisted Holmes for the equalizer with 1:32 left in regulation, and Carsen Kirchner (13 saves) saved a shot by Michael Wiegand with 14 seconds left to send things to overtime.

Things did not appear on track for overtime after the first quarter. Massachusetts Maritime stormed out to a 4-1 lead, then it entered halftime up 7-5 and even led 9-6 with 8:33 left in the third quarter. That’s when Scranton began to turn things around.

Carson scored to cut it to 9-7, then Kozak scored twice in the span of 40 seconds, knotting the score at 9. The sides traded one-goal leads the rest of the way, trading blows and setting up the dramatic overtime.

Scranton has now advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament in each of the past four seasons, but it has yet to break through and advance into the third round under head coach Michael Hofmeister.

Continue on for the rest of the scores from the opening round of the tournament, as well as the second-round schedule.
