CARY, N.C. — Down by six after the first quarter and held without a goal for the first 20:16, Boston College looked every bit overmatched by defending national championship Northwestern. For the second year in a row, it looked like another Wildcats blowout of the Eagles for a title.

But Boston College awakened in the second quarter, cutting the deficit to two by halftime.

The Eagles took their first lead with 9:39 left when Andrea Reynolds picked up a rebound off a save and scored high. While Northwestern did anything but back down, the Eagles held on — thanks to doorstep save with 28 seconds left in the game.

The 14-13 win in front of 4,884 at WakeMed Soccer Park gives Boston College its second national championship in program history. It was the seventh straight appearance in the title game for BC, which won its first title in 2021.

Kayla Martello scored five goals to lead Boston College, and her four straight BC goals in the second quarter turned a 6-2 deficit into an 8-6 one by halftime.

Izzy Scane scored five times in her final college game. She scored all three Northwestern tallies of the fourth quarter in an attempt to bring her team back to the top.
