In conjunction with this year’s National Celebrate Lacrosse Week, USA Lacrosse is proudly recognizing volunteers from across the country who are helping to grow the game on the grass roots level. Each day, we will profile someone who makes a positive difference in their community. Join us as we celebrate local lacrosse heroes from coast-to-coast.
Name: Donald Wilson
Local Lacrosse Organization: Bridgeport Youth Lacrosse
Location: Bridgeport, Conn.
HOW THIS PERSON IMPACTS THE LOCAL GROWTH OF THE GAME
As the founder of Bridgeport Youth Lacrosse in 2008, Wilson has spent the past two decades actively growing the game through youth clinics, school partnerships, travel teams, in-house leagues, mentoring, and special events. Still active in leading the BYL’s day-to-day operations, Wilson is committed to offering lacrosse opportunities to youth in underserved communities through affordable and inclusive programming.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT AND CONTRIBUTIONS
One of Wilson’s key objectives with BYL is increasing lacrosse awareness and opportunity among urban youth and using lacrosse to empower youth with self-confidence, discipline, and the skills necessary to succeed in sports and life. Beyond the field, the BYL’s year-round after school program provides academic intervention, behavioral support, mentoring, leadership training, and sports instruction to over 1,200 students throughout Fairfield County
WHAT OTHERS HAVE TO SAY
“Don’s commitment has always been about more than just developing lacrosse players. It has been about breaking down barriers, creating opportunities, building character, and using lacrosse as a bridge to education, leadership, and lifelong success. Behind the scenes, he works tirelessly to secure equipment and sponsorships, build community partnerships, and gather financial support so more children can participate without the high costs traditionally associated with lacrosse.”
