A huge win by Broadneck (Md.) and a loss by Darien (Conn.) orchestrated the most significant changes in the latest USA Lacrosse Public High School Girls’ National Top 25. Radnor (Pa.) used a rivalry win and Glenelg High (Md.) earned another county title to join the national rankings.
Nora Lopes scored in double overtime and Molly Robinson made 11 saves to give Broadneck an historic victory. The Bruins’ 6-5 win over previous No. 3 Severna Park (Md.) clinched their first Anne Arundel County championship since 2014. It also avenged a one-goal loss in the regular season.
The domino effect is that Broadneck’s win gives Cape Henlopen (Del.) a boost. The Vikings don’t have the strength of schedule of some in the region, and an unusual tie is the only blemish on their record, but they handed Broadneck a six-goal loss earlier this season.
Nyack (N.Y.) leapfrogs Darien to become the new No. 2. Adjusting to life without injured star Annabell Adams (Virginia), the Blue Wave dropped to No. 4 after a loss to Sacred Heart Greenwich (Conn.). Darien hosts Ridgefield (Conn.) today.
No. 3 Chatham (N.J.) advanced to its county tournament final for the fifth straight year. Chatham’s only loss is to overall national No. 1 St. Anthony’s (N.Y.).
Nyack is the new No. 1 in the Northeast Region over Darien, which moves to No. 2. The only other change in the region was Garden City (N.Y.) moving up a spot to No. 7 after its Woodstick Classic win over Manhasset (N.Y.).
The Mid-Atlantic Region rankings shifted when Radnor re-entered the region rankings. The No. 10 Raptors got four goals from Marin Mooney and four draw controls and five ground balls from Taylor Murphy in a 7-6 win over previously ranked Conestoga (Pa.) in what’s become a must-see rivalry.
Summit (N.J.) won a one-goal game over a strong Westfield (N.J.) team in its county semifinals. No. 9 Downingtown West (Pa.) lost, but it was a hard-fought double-overtime game against 15-2 Bishop Shanahan (Pa.).
Glenelg High won its fifth straight Howard County championship when Eliza Mitchell made six saves and Kayleigh White, Regan Kelleher, Kaitlyn Hill, Graceyn Brown and Ema Chapin all scored twice apiece in the defending Class 2A state champion's 14-6 win over Centennial (Md.).
In the South Region, Vero Beach (Fla.) entered the rankings at No. 10 after it moved into the Class 2A tournament semifinals. Plant (Fla.) moved up a spot to No. 3 after it climbed to 22-0 on its run through the playoffs. Plant is the No. 1 seed in Class 2A. Anderson (Texas), which had been in the 3 spot, lost earlier this week in their super regionals game.
Indian Hill (Ohio) is a newcomer in the Midwest Region. The Braves have won 10 of their last 11 games, and have some quality wins. They beat Ursuline Academy (Ohio) to begin the year and handed Kentucky Country Day (Ky.) one of their four losses as well as knocking off solid Milford (Ohio) and Sycamore (Ohio) squads. Upper Arlington (Ohio) gained ground after a pair of narrow losses to Midwest powers Loyola Academy (Ill.) and region public No. 1 New Trier (Ill.).
Evergreen (Colo.) joined the West Region rankings after it beat previous No. 6 ThunderRidge (Colo.) in the midst of its win streak. Otherwise, the region is unchanged with unbeaten Coronado (Calif.) leading the rankings. No. 3 Mira Costa (Calif.) also remains perfect heading into a rematch with No. 5 Marlborough (Calif.) which stayed within two goals in the first meeting.
