Introducing 'Lacrosse Health,' a New Series Designed to Keep You in the Game

MedStar Health and USA Lacrosse have partnered to produce a new series of articles and podcasts on health, wellness and performance.

“Lacrosse Health” will feature subject matter experts in these areas, as well as coaches, skills professionals, researchers, social scientists and leaders from the lacrosse community.

For more than 25 years, MedStar Health and USA Lacrosse have worked together on education, research, clinical care and health administration efforts that have improved injury prevention, player performance and the overall safety of the sport.

We’re tapping into that expertise. Articles will be posted periodically on the MedStar Health and USA Lacrosse websites, with podcasts available wherever you subscribe.

Here are 10 topics we’ll explore.

1. Epidemiology: What are the unifying, underlying reasons that lacrosse injuries occur? Hint: It’s all about energy.

2. Injury prevention: What are the holistic, comprehensive platforms we need to utilize when trying to prevent lacrosse injuries? Think crash test dummies, seat belts and crumple zones in the front of your car.

3. Sports medicine: What is the current state of lacrosse-specific medical literature? What do we know and what don’t we know?

4. Sports tech: How are biometrics and technology being applied to lacrosse health, safety and performance? How is the data collected/utilized and whose data is it?

5. Common denominator: What are the priority injuries in lacrosse? Do they vary on age, gender, level of play and game type?

6. Grind culture:  How to best train and practice for lacrosse success. Is it always 10,000 hours?

7. Matters of the heart: We’ve studied and addressed commotio cordis. Are there other heart-related conditions we need to understand? Yes, not only for players but also coaches and officials.

8. Anterior approach: You’ve torn your ACL. Now what?

9. Only the best: What goes into taking care of the U.S. National Teams? It takes a team to care for a team.

10. Centerstage: How do the Center for Sports Science and Safety, the Sports Science and Safety Committee and the MedStar Health/USA Lacrosse partnership bring value to me as a member of USA Lacrosse? Collaborative science elevates health, safety and performance for the entire lacrosse community.
