One Year Out from World Championship ... Again

Let’s try this again.

After a year’s postponement due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, we are once again officially one-year out from the beginning of the World Lacrosse Women’s World Championship.

Originally scheduled for the summer of 2021, the 10th edition of this event promises to be a special one that will be worth the wait. A record 30 nations will compete at Towson University from June 29 to July 9, 2022 and USA Lacrosse is proud to host the championship for the first time since 2005.

“I think we’ve all been craving world events and craving the opportunity to be with each other again,” said World Lacrosse president Sue Redfern. “The opportunity to watch top level women’s lacrosse, wonderful displays of lacrosse and seeing how the athletes have been able to develop during the lockdown is just going to be a wonderful, exciting, I think almost cathartic experience.”

World Lacrosse announced the seeding for the championship earlier this month, topped by the United States, Canada, England, Australia and Scotland.

The United States will aim to become the first host nation to win the championship on its home soil. Australia won the championship the previous two times the United States served as host (1989, 2005) and the U.S. has won the other seven championships.

Tickets for the championship will go on sale for the fall, but registration is already open for the World Festival. Running in conjunction with the world championship, the World Festival will be held at neighboring Goucher College and features the opportunity for teams from around the world to compete and watch the sport’s best players in action. The festival has six groupings for women’s competition — 13U, 14U, 16U, 18U, Elite (18+) and Social (18+).
