Casey Powell is one of the most creative players to ever play the sport – but even for a magician like him, it starts with the fundamentals.
Powell, a National Lacrosse Hall of Fame member, was a presenter at last year’s USA Lacrosse Academy in Denver and he’ll be back to share his knowledge again this year with fellow coaches from Dec. 6-7 at the Sonesta Hotel in Denver. Powell, the head boys’ lacrosse coach at Colorado Academy, will present this year on “How to Become an All-American in Your Own Back Yard.”
At last year’s event, Powell shared a series of his favorite drills and “go-to” training concepts. One of the drills is ROOTB22, something he and his brother, Ryan, developed based off a drill by famed basketball coach John Wooden.
In the drill, he sets up three rows of six cones, with each cone about three yards apart. Players start in the triple-threat position and then go through the cones with a series of different movements such as roll dodges, split dodges, face dodges and more. The goal is for the players to get comfortable with the stick in their hand while working on their footwork.
Here's a sample clip from his presentation.
The entire four-part course offers an in-depth look into the fundamentals, mindset, and training habits needed to build successful youth lacrosse players.
