Taylor Cummings, one of the most decorated athletes in lacrosse history, is one of 24 finalists for the International World Games Association (IWGA) Athlete of the Year for 2021. Online voting for the award will begin on Jan. 10.
Cummings, a member of the U.S. women’s national team since 2014, led the leaderboard in the inaugural season of Athletes Unlimited women’s lacrosse with 1,934 points earned in 15 games. One of the most versatile players in the sport, Cummings finished the season with 27 goals, 11 assists, 31 ground balls, 17 caused turnovers and 79 draw controls.
Following up the Athletes Unlimited season, Cummings led the U.S. women to a sweep of Canada and reigning NCAA champion Boston College during the USA Lacrosse Fall Classic. Cummings tied for the team lead with three goals and had a team-high five draw controls in a 19-3 win over Canada and added a team-best three draw controls in a 13-5 win over Boston College.
Cummings will be a leader of the U.S. women’s team that competes in the 2022 World Lacrosse Women’s World Championship this summer at Towson University from June 29 – July 9. Cummings earned all-world honors during the 2017 world championship in England when she captured her first gold medal with the U.S. program.
The U.S. women will also have representation at The World Games 2022 in Birmingham, Ala., July 7-17. The IWGA multi-sport event will include the new Sixes discipline for both men and women. A modified version of women’s lacrosse was included in the 2017 at the IWGA event when Cummings helped the U.S. win gold in Poland.
Cummings surpassed 300 career points and 500 draw controls during her illustrious collegiate career at the University of Maryland where she became the sport’s only three-time winner of the Tewaaraton Award and led the Terps to two national championships.
