The U.S. men’s sixes national team will be back in action for the second time in three weeks when it competes at the World Lacrosse Super Sixes event in Oshawa, Ontario from Oct. 10-12. The U.S. went 2-1 at the Atlas Cup in late September, beating the Haudenosaunee Nationals and Puerto Rico while losing to Canada.
Three players that competed in the Atlas Cup – Matt Brandau, Zach Geddes and Coulter Mackesy – will also be competing in the Super Sixes event. Mackesy and Geddes were both late additions to the Atlas Cup roster due to injuries, but had strong showings. Mackesy led the team in goals (11) and points (16) in the three games while Geddes had a hat trick in an opening-game win over Puerto Rico. Brandau, a silver medalist for the U.S. sixes team at The World Games in 2022, made the all-tournament team at the Atlas Cup after registering 15 points (9g, 6a).
U.S. head coach Andy Shay will get to look at several other players as the U.S. program continues the building process towards the 2028 LA Olympics, including the sixes debut for U.S. national team star Blaze Riorden. A captain for the U.S. box team and the outstanding goalie at the 2023 World Lacrosse field championship, Riorden brings tremendous versatility, playing as a runner in box lacrosse and a goalie in field lacrosse.
Four players on the Super Sixes roster played with the U.S. at the USA Lacrosse Experience in Indianapolis last year – Grant Ament, Liam Entenmann, Pat Kavanagh and T.J. Malone. The remaining players on the roster – Chris Kavanagh, Sam King, C.J. Kirst and Connor Kirst – participated in the U.S. team training camp, but will be making their sixes competition debuts with the U.S. program.
The U.S. will be competing in Pool B at the Super Sixes event with games against Germany, the Haudenosaunee Nationals, Mexico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. More information on the event can be found here.
