AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The United States wrapped up pool play with a 25-2 victory over Mexico in the Pan-American Women’s Lacrosse Championship at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex.
The U.S. is a perfect 3-0 in the tournament and will play the Haudenosaunee Nation in Sunday’s first semifinal at 10 a.m. with live streaming available on World Lacrosse TV. Canada will meet Puerto Rico in the second semifinal.
Chloe Humphrey and Sam Apuzzo led the U.S. offense against Mexico with Humphrey pouring in nine points on five goals and four assists.
Apuzzo matched Humphrey with nine points, scoring three times and dishing out a team-high six assists. Kenzie Kent had two goals and four assists, Izzy Scane had four goals and Marie McCool had a big game with a hat trick and a team-high 10 draw controls.
Shea Dolce went the distance in goal to earn the victory for the U.S., making three saves while allowing just two goals.
This was the first game ever between the U.S. and Mexico in women’s lacrosse and Mexico strung together a solid run late in the third quarter into the early fourth quarter. Chloe Hunter scored Mexico’s first goal with a little over three minutes to go in the third quarter. The U.S. dominated the draw in the game, but Mexico won the first three draws of the fourth quarter, one of them leading to a goal by Sophia Cuteno.
Mexico finished pool play in third place in Pool A and will play Jamaica in the placement round on Sunday. Argentina will meet Peru in the other placement game. The winners of the two placement round games will meet for fifth place in the tournament with the winner earning a berth into the World Lacrosse Women’s Championship in Tokyo next summer. All four semifinalists – Canada, Haudenosaunee, Puerto Rico and the United States – have already clinched their spots.
