Kids want to play. They want to have fun. They want to learn lacrosse. Coaches make that happen.
Coaches are the teachers of the game and the keepers of the sport's tradition. They introduce the game to new players, help develop the skills of all participants, and along the way, seek to instill a lifelong passion for lacrosse.
At USA Lacrosse, we recognize that coaches are the lifeblood of our sport. We also know that sometimes, coaches just need a quick idea for their upcoming practice, or a drill that might reinforce a skill that players are learning.
That’s why we maintain an online resource page for coaches who are looking for just the right ingredient to mix into their next practice. Our drills – aka games --- are designed so that when they are used with the appropriate progressions and constraints, athlete success is a given.
USA Lacrosse likes to use the word ‘games’ instead of ‘drills’ because, quite frankly, games are fun and more exciting to participate in. Structuring drills as mini-games provides opportunities for young athletes to engage in a fun, competitive, athlete-centered environment that supports growth and learning. We all know that, ultimately, athletes want to play games.
To get started, USA Lacrosse’s resource page for coaches lists 10 sample games that coaches can utilize. Many have familiar names, ranging from Hungry Hippos to Cat and Mouse, but all are structured to provide coaches with flexibility and to support the learning objective of the practice.
Click here to access USA Lacrosse’s menu of sample games (drills). Each listed game includes a short description, activity objective, diagram, and execution plan.
