SPARKS, Md. — The U.S. Women’s National Team enjoyed its highest-scoring game since 2009, defeating the Haudenosaunee Nationals 22-5 in the World Lacrosse Women’s Championship at Oi Stadium in Tokyo, Japan, on Sunday.
For the second straight day, 12 different players found the back of the net for USA, whose 22 goals were its most in world championship play since a 22-5 win over Ireland in the 2009 quarterfinals in Prague, Czech Republic. Fourteen of them were assisted.
Chloe Humphrey, Marie McCool and Izzy Scane each registered hat tricks, with Humphrey and McCool each adding two assists for a game-high five points. Ally Kennedy, Kenzie Kent, Emma LoPinto and Madison Taylor scored two goals apiece.
Ally Mastroianni (seven draws won) and McCool (four) helped stabilize the U.S. in the center circle, as the teams split evenly the 30 draws with 15 apiece.
The Haudenosaunee were led by former Syracuse standout Sierra Cockerille, who scored three goals. Otherwise, they found little room to operate against a USA defense that has proven largely impenetrable through two games.
Katie Goodale and Sydney Scales each caused two turnovers for the U.S., which forced nine of the Haudenosaunee’s 15 miscues. The U.S. led 13-0 at halftime and outshot the Haudenosaunee 30-9 for the game.
The four-time defending world champs never relented and improved to 2-0 in the world championship. They’re off Monday and conclude pool play Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Tokyo time (5:30 a.m. U.S. Eastern time) against Chinese Taipei.
