Federico was a goalie at Boys' Latin (Md.) School, where he was a member of the MSA Division II champion team in 1974. He was selected to the MSA all-star team in 1976.

At Johns Hopkins University, Federico was a member of the NCAA Championship teams of 1978, 1979 and 1980, earning first team All-America honors and winning the Ensign C. Markland Kelly award as the nation's outstanding goalie all three years. He was selected as Most Valuable Player of the 1979 NCAA championship game. In 1980, he played for the South team in the North/South Collegiate All-Star game. He was awarded Hopkins' William C. Schmeisser Award for defense in 1980.

Federico was selected as a member of the NCAA 25th Anniversary Team. In 1998, he was inducted to the US Lacrosse Greater Baltimore Chapter Hall of Fame. He continues his service to the game as a camp clinician in Baltimore, and currently resides in Towson, Md.
