USA Lacrosse Public High School Boys' Rankings: Springfield, Urbana Top Rivals for Titles

Tournament time sometimes pits rivals against each other with even more on the line.

Today, third-seeded Staples (Conn.), fresh off its 13-8 semifinal win over Darien (Conn.), meets top-seeded New Canaan (Conn.) at Wilton High (Conn.) for the FCIAC championship. Staples won the meeting by a goal two weeks ago and won 11-8 back on April 16. The winner could get a bump up in next week's USA Lacrosse Public High School Boys’ National Top 25, presented by CWENCH Hydration. 

The only newcomer in this week's largely unchanged top 25 is Victor (N.Y.). The Blue Devils defeated Irondequoit (N.Y.) and Hilton (N.Y.) in the Section 5 Class B tournament to set up a great matchup for the section championship Saturday against 18-0 Pittsford (N.Y.). Pittsford beat them by a goal in the regular season.

Jayden Sharper scored five goals to help Urbana (Md.) beat Broadneck (Md.) 14-3 for the Class 4A state championship. Urbana advanced with a 17-3 win over Leonardtown (Md.). They also beat Broadneck in each of the last two year’s finals. Broadneck was in its fifth straight finals. Urbana’s only loss this year came against private Bullis (Md.).

Maryland commit Brad Barber had five goals and an assist, Penn State-bound Luke Valerio scored a goal and had five assists and Ty Rush went 20 for 22 at the faceoff X as Springfield-Delco (Pa.) defeated Radnor (Pa.) for their district championship. The state tournament opens next week for both teams.

Garden City (N.Y.) defeated Rosyln (N.Y.) 15-6 in the Nassau County Section VIII Class B semifinals. The top-seeded Trojans won their 20th title last year and will look for another June 1 against either Bethpage (N.Y.) or Manhasset (N.Y.).

Other notable developments:

—  Summit (N.J.) opened the North Jersey Group 3 state tournament with an 18-0 win over Nutley (N.J.) in the first round. The Hilltoppers will host the winner of Morris Knolls (N.J.) vs. Princeton (N.J.) on June 1.

—  Ridgewood (N.J.) also opened their sectional with a big win. The Maroon were 28-2 winners over North Brunswick (N.J.) in the North Jersey Group 4 first round. The No. 1 seed plays Parsippany Hills/Parsippany (N.J.) on June 1.

—  Shawnee (N.J.) began the South Jersey Group 3 tournament with a 25-0 win over Highland (N.J.). They face either Hammonton (N.J.) or Hightstown (N.J.) on June 1 in the quarterfinals.

—  Top-seeded Chatham (N.J.) opens North Jersey Group 3 play against Middletown North (N.J.) today.

 —  Robinson (Va.) faces Woodson (Va.) for the Class 6 Region C championship Friday. Robinson won its semifinal matchup over Lake Braddock (Va.) 13-2. The Rams have won 14 straight games.

—  Cold Spring Harbor (N.Y.) opened the Nassau County Section VIII Class D playoffs with a 16-0 win over Oyster Bay (N.Y.). They face Locust Valley (N.Y.) in the championship June 2 at Hofstra. 

— Syosset (N.Y.) defeated Farmingdale (N.Y.) 12-4 in the Nassau County Section VIII Class A semifinals. Massapequa is trying to get by Port Washington (N.Y.) today in the other semifinal. The final is slated for June 2 at Hofstra.

— Mamaroneck (N.Y.) opened the Section 1 Class A state tournament with an 18-3 win over Arlington (N.Y.). The top seed hosts Clarkstown South (N.Y.) in the semifinals Friday. The final is June 2 at Yorktown High (N.Y.).

— Northport (N.Y.) will face Sachem North (N.Y.) in the Suffolk County Section XI Class A final Saturday at Stony Brook. The top seed rolled through William Floyd (N.Y.) in the quarterfinals and Half Hollow Hills (N.Y.) in the semifinals.

— Wantagh (N.Y.) advanced to the Nassau County Section VIII Class C tournament final with a 19-7 win over North Shore (N.Y.). They face either Seaford (N.Y.) or South Side (N.Y.) in the final June 1 at Hofstra.

— In the regional rankings, Shawnee moves back into the Mid-Atlantic Top 10 as they head toward a sectional crown. Park City (Utah) makes a big jump in the West up to No. 3 after securing a state title. The Northeast, South and Midwest rankings did not change.
