Inducted as a truly great player, Sombrotto attended Chaminade (N.Y.) High School and Hofstra University, where he was a second team All-American midfielder in 1980. He then became one of the most decorated international players ever, playing on an unprecedented four U.S. Teams (1982, 1986, 1990, 1994) and winning gold each time. He was named to the All-World Team in 1982.

Sombrotto also enjoyed an illustrious career as a post-collegiate club player, beginning in 1981 as a member of the Long Island-Hofstra Lacrosse Club.  He led the squad to 10 national club championship and was selected to the USCLA All-Club team 15 times. Additionally, he was honored as the USCLA's National Player of the Year three times and was recipient of the Krongard Award, the highest honor in club lacrosse

Beginning in 1987, Sombrotto joined the professional ranks as a member of the Major Indoor Lacrosse League's New York Saints, and later, the Long Island Lizards in Major League Lacrosse. He tallied 38 goals and 110 assists in 71 career games between the two professional teams, playing his last game in 2002. 

Sombrotto has also been inducted into the Hofstra Athletics Hall of Fame, the Port Washington Youth Activities Hall of Fame, and the Long Island-Metropolitan Lacrosse Foundation Hall of Fame.
